Titanic II Cruise Ship to Set Sail in 2016

Updated on March 27, 2013

Billionaire Plans to Recreate the Titanic II Design and its Maiden Voyage

For all of us who have been engrossed by the historic tragedy of the Titanic disaster, there's news about the doomed ocean liner. Australian billionaire, Clive Palmer announced the construction of a new Titanic ship, the Titanic II.

Palmer will finance the construction of the luxury liner, which will be built in China. Construction design will copy the original design of 1920's Titanic to build Titanic II.

Of course, it will have updated engineering to match modern day advances. Though the plans are to replicate the original luxury liner's furnishings and decor, it will have contemporary conveniences, like air conditioning. They're debating adding Internet.

Besides those upgrades, there are other differences between the modern ship and its doomed predecessor.

Life boats will be available for all passengers (one of the reason Titanic survivors didn't have a chance of survival was too few life boats).

The builder will not take on the previous shipbuilder's arrogance of building an "Unsinkable" ship. Palmer has been quoted as saying that no ship can survive a hole in it. As history shows, the so-proclaimed "Unsinkable Titanic" couldn't survive the huge gash in its hull, after hitting an iceberg.

The Titanic II voyage is scheduled for 2016. Not only will the design replicate the original ship, all the elaborate furnishings will be the same as the original.

Do you remember the gorgeous, winding, grand staircase from the Titanic movie? Yes, it'll be there. Guests will also have the option to dress in 1920's wardrobe to re-live the era of the first ship's passengers. The voyage will also follow the original ship's passage.

Some are saying it's a horrible idea, even going as far as saying it dishonors the people who died on the Titanic. See what the rest of the world thinks, and leave your thoughts on the news of Titanic II.

In the past, there have been other ships that followed Titanic's maiden voyage, including the route, food, costumes, and music. Though some may not want to board a ship named Titanic, these memorial cruises have been popular cruises.

Over the years, the Titanic tragedy and history has captivated people worldwide. Documentaries, movies, and books review different angles of nearly everything associated with the event, the ship, the captain and crew, the survivors and more.

When the news broke about the future Titanic II, reaction was mixed. Of course, some tweeted jokes about the wisdom of a sequel (in both a ship and movie), or referenced beloved characters, Jack and Rose, from the Titanic movie. Other people expressed their goal in booking a passage for the 2016 cruise, mentioning how they'd love to re-live and honor the historic ocean liner and its passengers.

Reactions included everything from sarcasm to awe to horror. When people questioned the safety of boarding another Titanic, their horror was met with the reality that this is a new cruise ship, a better built ship. And certainly we hope that history has taught us the lessons of all the mistakes that doomed the passengers of that first ship.

In March 2012, UK Publisher The History Press decided to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic maiden voyage and tragedy by tweeting its voyage in 'real time tweets'.

The tweets replicated what could have been the thoughts and messages from the Captain, staff, passengers and other people involved in the event.

The tweets mentioned news surrounding the each step of the voyage: from the staff's pride of Titanic's extravagance and speed to the iceberg accident and panic and finally, the Concardia staff's rescue of survivors.

The Twitter account will resume its tweeting in March.
