Digital Bookmarks Make Reading Fun

Updated on April 12, 2013

Track Your Kids' Reading Time

You can accurately keep track of your children's reading times with these digital bookmarks! These are a great help when used with reading homework. Some children have to complete a certain amount of reading hours, and these digital bookmarks will help you track those hours.

You won't have to use the kitchen timer to track your kids' reading times. And how many times have you guesstimated?I know I have. My son and I would choose a book he wanted to read that night, and I'd remind him to read for the required time (usually 30 minutes per night, required from his teacher).

When he was younger, I would read the book to him. But when he was reading on his own, then he may sit and read for awhile without me. I'd take a quick look at the clock to track the beginning time. Then I'd busy myself with something else. "Uh, I think it's been at least half an hour".

Since my son acquired our family's love of reading, it was usually no problem to read for 30 minutes. Sometimes, I would have to stop him because it was time for bed! But there were days when he was busy with other homework and I wanted to be sure that he had read for the required time.

Reading is so important -- for school and for life. If your child needs to keep track of reading times because of school requirements, this type of marker will make it so easy for you.

No more guessing, no more forgetting to set the timer. Your kids will enjoy setting the timer on their own digital bookmark.

There's a great selection showcased here. With a variety of available colors and styles, you're sure to buy one that your child loves.

Since our entire family loves reading, we also love our bookmarks. While this page highlights the digital kind, we've also included magnetic and themed ones that your kids will love too.

Make reading fun and homework a joy!

Why Keep Track of Your Child's Reading Time?

In many schools, teachers require students to read a set amount of time each night or each week. Throughout the years, my son has been required to read for 30 minutes per night. Kids may also participate in a book reading contest, through the schools or public libraries, that track the number of books read and/or the amount of time read by the child.

You can keep track on a sheet of paper, of course. But sometimes, you glance at the clock, as you're off to check on dinner or put another load of wash in the laundry. It's not as accurate as a digital bookmark.

Another reason is the product itself. Our kids seem attracted to electronics in general. Enter the popular digital bookmark, which is easy to use for parents or kids.

If you have a reluctant reader, keeping track of reading time may entice your child to read more. As your child sees the bookmark tracking the minutes read, it can almost be a game to see how much more they can read. It gives parents another way to offer positive feedback on their children's reading time.

Colorful Digital Bookmarks

One of the best digital bookmarks for kids are the brand, Mark My Time.Customer reviews give good ratings for this brand. They mention the large controls, the simplicity, the durability (especially if the bookmark falls out of the book on the ground), colors and fun factor.

Customers enjoy that they can track their kids' reading times, whether it's a requirement for school or a family 'rule' of reading before bedtime.

**One caution to note: These are NOT good for measuring time for reading improvement. Some kids need to read faster, particularly to finish their reading tests in an allotted time period. These bookmarks will not keep track of seconds, as it flips to minutes after 60 seconds.

This measurement flip won't affect people who strictly want to track the total reading time - it's perfect for keeping track of kids' reading time!

Even though it's a neat device in itself, why not make it more enjoyable and buy it with a cool design.

Here are some colorful designs, such as bright colors, animal prints and camouflage. You can also find the styles in a variety of colors, like bright pink and camo green or purple. Choose your kids' favorite color, and they'll love their bookmark.

More Bookmark Styles

Can you have too many bookmarks? Not in our house! While we enjoy the digital ones for tracking reading time, it's fun to use different types. Your kids may enjoy some of these themed bookmarks.

One of the best things about these page markers is that they'll keep kids interested in reading the books. If your kids love the Hunger Games series, buy them a themed bookmark with their favorite character. If they're younger, they may love to read Spongebob or Sesame Street books. Both have bookmarks with those characters.

Regardless of the type you purchase, make sure that it will be easy for your child. Some offer a heavier marker with beaded 'tail' that sticks out of the book. For some of the character markers, the character's head sits on top of the pages.

Since we love reading, we also love finding markers with our favorite series characters. Your child can zoom through a favorite series without losing their page.

Videos: The Importance of Reading

I started reading to my son when he was born. I started his 'library' of books when I was pregnant. It included the beginner books that were simple colors, shapes with plastic, squishy pages (perfect for drooling on or chewing on).

We nurtured the love of reading along the way, always adding to his library. He loved reading before bedtime. At first, one of us would read to him, as we snuggled into a nighttime routine. As he began to read on his own, he often read before bedtime. The love of reading has so many benefits, including academic success.

I'm so happy that he always views a book as a good gift or reward for an achievement. Starting a new book is a favorite activity to dive into. Here are videos on the importance of reading and in reading to your kids.
