Titanic in 3D Movie

Updated on August 30, 2017

Blockbuster Movie Titanic Re-released in 3D

Titanic 3D opened in U.S. theaters on April 4, 2012. The film was re-released in the dynamic, 3D medium, much to the delight of moviegoers. The film's release date commemorates the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking (April 15).

Many moviegoers are excited to experience the iconic film in its new medium, particularly since the 1997 release of Titanic (with actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) broke many film records.

James Cameron wrote, directed and produced Titanic. The film fictionalized the tragic voyage in a romantic adventure story. It was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 11, including Best Picture and Best Director. It also broke financial film records, as it was the first film to gross billion dollar sales (it grossed over $1.8 billion). For 12 years, it kept the record of being the highest-grossing film of all time.

The 3D Titanic not only commemorates the voyage's centennial anniversary, but it also marks 15 years since the film was released. Cameron was in charge of the 3D production with his partner, producer Jon Landau.

The real life tragedy still captivates people worldwide. The RMS Titanic was the largest, luxury ocean liner at that time. On April 14, 1912,at 11:40 p.m., the ship hit an iceberg; sliced its hull underwater. Water rushed into the lower decks. In less than 3 hours, the gigantic ship was gone. The "Unsinkable Titanic" (as it was promoted to be) sank into the waters at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, the liner filled with water, broke in half, and sunk in freezing depths of the ocean. The luxury liner had carried 2,223 passengers onboard; 700 people survived, but 1,517 people lost their lives. Unfortunately, its maiden voyage was its last.

The Titanic movie is the fictionalized story of Rose DeWitt Bukater. As an 81-year woman, she accompanies her granddaughter to meet members of the shipwreck's recovery crew. As Rose looks at the underwater pieces of the Titanic, she retells her long ago, love story aboard the doomed luxury ocean liner. She was an engaged socialite, who fell in love with Jack Dawson, a poor but charming artist. Rose was depressed about her future with an arranged marriage to a man she doesn't love. Jack is daring, adventurous, and living life to the fullest. His philosophy was life wasn't about material wealth but to make every day count.

Their love affair is the crux of the story, but it also includes the drama of class differences and evil doers. Rose's mother insists she marry the first class and wealthy, Cal Hockley. Rose, her mother, and Cal are people of privilege - and enjoy the ship's first class seats. Class differences - both in societal expectations, perception and treatment -- continue throughout the movie, depicting life in 1912.

The movie relives Rose and Jack's love journey, as the recovery crew and Rose's granddaughter listen intently. The crew has been researching the site for three years and had hoped to find a particular, rare diamond necklace - The Heart of the Ocean, given to Rose by her fiance.

It's a heart wrenching love story amid the backdrop of one of the world's well known maritime disaster. The movie, rated PG -13, is considered a romance, adventure, drama.
